Exploring the Last Frontier: A Guide to Alaskan Cruises & Excursions

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many travelers, and there's no better way to experience its breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife than on an Alaskan cruise. Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, an Alaskan cruise offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and stunning natural beauty. From towering glaciers to abundant marine life, this journey will leave you in awe.

Why Choose an Alaskan Cruise?

An Alaskan cruise allows you to explore multiple destinations while enjoying the comfort and luxury of your cruise ship. Instead of worrying about long drives or flights between locations, you can sit back and take in the stunning scenery from your balcony. Popular cruise lines such as Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean all offer fantastic itineraries tailored to different travel styles.

Some highlights of an Alaskan cruise include:

  • Glacier Viewing – Sail past massive glaciers like Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay, and Tracy Arm Fjord.

  • Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for whales, sea otters, bald eagles, and bears.

  • Scenic Cruising – Enjoy breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, fjords, and coastal towns.

  • Cultural Experiences – Learn about the rich history and traditions of Alaska’s Indigenous peoples.

Must-Do Excursions in Alaska

Alaska is all about adventure, and shore excursions are the perfect way to immerse yourself in the state’s natural wonders. Here are some of the top excursions to consider during your cruise:

1. Dog Sledding on a Glacier (Juneau)

Step onto a helicopter for a breathtaking ride over the Alaskan wilderness before landing on a glacier, where you’ll meet a team of energetic sled dogs. Experience the thrill of dog sledding across the icy terrain—an unforgettable experience!

2. Whale Watching (Juneau, Icy Strait Point, or Ketchikan)

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales and orcas in their natural habitat. Hop aboard a whale-watching tour and witness these magnificent creatures breaching and playing in the icy waters.

3. Glacier Trekking (Skagway or Juneau)

For an up-close look at Alaska’s glaciers, take a guided trek across the icy landscapes. Equipped with crampons and expert guidance, you'll explore crevasses, ice caves, and stunning blue ice formations.

4. Scenic Railways (Skagway)

Ride the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a historic narrow-gauge train that winds through breathtaking mountain passes, waterfalls, and deep gorges, offering some of the most scenic views in Alaska.

5. Lumberjack Show & Totem Park (Ketchikan)

Experience the excitement of an authentic lumberjack competition as skilled ax throwers and log climbers put on an entertaining show. Afterward, take a trip to Saxman Native Village to admire beautifully carved totem poles and learn about the rich culture of Alaska’s Indigenous communities.

6. Bear Viewing (Sitka or Ketchikan)

For wildlife enthusiasts, a guided bear-watching excursion is a must! Visit places like Fortress of the Bear in Sitka or Traitor’s Cove in Ketchikan to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

Best Time to Cruise Alaska

The Alaskan cruise season runs from May through September, with the peak months being June, July, and August. Each month offers unique experiences:

  • May & September – Fewer crowds, cooler weather, and a chance to see the Northern Lights.

  • June & July – Warmer weather, longer daylight hours, and peak wildlife activity.

  • August – Ideal for salmon runs, which attract bears and eagles.

I LOVE Disney!!!

My name is Tracey and I’m a Disney Vacation Planner and an adult Disnerd! I live in Rhode Island with my husband Chris. I have two adult children and 4 grandchildren (2 grandsons and 2 step granddaughters).

Chris and I bought into Disney Vacation Club in 2020 (during the pandemic) sight unseen. We just knew that we wanted to bring our grandchild (only 1 at the time) to Disney World as much as possible. We couldn’t be any happier with our decision!

Since 2020 we have been about twice a year. Mostly family trips but we’ve had a few trips of just the two of us. We are planning a family trip this fall. It will be the granddaughters and my youngest grandsons first trip. We are going to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and we’re super excited.

We have our traditions. We always have breakfast at Chef Mickey’s and we always get cookies from Gideon’s Bake House in Disney Springs but every time we go it’s unique and we make more unforgettable memories.

I would love to plan your magical vacation so you can create your own unforgettable memories. Contact me so we can start planning right away!
